Release versions help you identify what changed and whether the package is newer than the one already installed. Read the release title, notes and changelog before updating a live WHMCS installation.
If you skip several versions, check whether there are special upgrade steps. When in doubt, update a staging site first and keep a backup of your WHMCS files and database.
